(31 Aug 2017)

In addition to private (one-to-one), partner and small group lessons, we have scheduled a diverse range of group courses, workshops and ensembles – for students of all ages and skill levels – for the 2017-2018 school year. These include:

Pre-Instrumental, Guitar, Piano/Keyboard and Violin Courses for Children

Music for Me Courses

Designed for children aged 3-4, 4-5 and 5-6, the New School's Music for Me Programme is a unique introduction to music and music-making, all in a nurturing and creative environment.

Music for Me is the New School’s ‘pre-instrumental’ or ‘early years’ music programme, designed to prepare children for further music exploration and help them to make a successful transition to instrumental study. The programme can be taken sequentially, or children can enter, subject to available places, at any level.

'The class has been very beneficial for our child, who went from being extremely shy at the start to fully participating and enjoying the class each week. It has been the perfect balance of learning and fun.'
– S. Ayers Lewis

'Great classes that help children to develop and appreciate music. [They] leave each week happy and want to return the following week. Everything I had hoped for.'
– D. McKenna

Music Theory & Sight Singing Courses

The development of a complete musician requires far more than simply learning to play an instrument or sing. For this reason the New School offers theory and musicianship lessons and courses, designed to supplement and support the student's practical studies.

'This course is perfect for anyone with an interest in music. It starts with the very basics of theory and the information is made easy to understand. There is a good atmosphere in the class, being with people who share your passion for music.'
– D. Mullins

'Sight singing is a skill that I thought was beyond me, but when it was broken down and explained well by an excellent teacher, and then practiced of course, it’s amazing how quickly it became second nature!'
– N. Casey

First Term Songwriting Course

Whether you are new to songwriting and would like to take your music beyond the shower, or you have already written songs but would like to have a better grounding in the basics, the New School’s Songwriting Workshop, taught by acclaimed songwriter and musician Kieran McEvoy, is a hands-on course designed to help you develop your creative ideas – in any music genre – and turn them into finished songs.

'This course gave me great confidence in songwriting, and to have the guidance of a professional songwriter was so helpful. The course helped me both lyrically and musically to realise my songwriting potential, and I am now constantly writing new material.'
– A. Bradley

'In a few weeks I finished four songs. I found my melodic voice, which I thought was impossible as I don't play an instrument. I'd like to do a more advanced class with Kieran!'
– S. Kelly

Ensembles

Ensemble playing (and singing) is an essential – though often neglected – part of any musical education, and New School ensemble and choir members, under the direction of dedicated and experienced teachers/coaches, enjoy the unique pleasures of group music-making through weekly rehearsals and regular performances of a varied repertoire. We aim not only to make some great music, rehearsed to public performance standard, but to have a lot of fun in doing so! Our ensembles are open to both New School and external music students. (Students concurrently enrolled for private or group tuition at the school receive a 50% discount off ensemble fees.)

'The teacher's enthusiasm and patience, and sensitivity to the varied standards of playing within the group, allows everyone to reach a satisfying standard of music making. A great opportunity to experience ensemble music making where the whole becomes greater than the parts!'
– J. Dillon

'Fun, challenging...with lots of good singing. The choir has improved my confidence, and I'm always in a good mood when the class is over. Cathy great!'
