Waltons New School of Music - Flamenco Guitar Basics Course

Flamenco Guitar Basics

Group Course for Intermediate Students

'It's something strange, but I never used to think of myself as playing music. I was living a special kind of life, flamenco.'
Paco de Lucía

Course Description

Rhythmic, percussive, melodic, haunting and intensely passionate, the captivating sound of the flamenco guitar is unmistakable. Taught by a renowned flamenco performer and teacher, Waltons New School of Music’s Flamenco Guitar Basics course provides an extensive introduction to the flamenco form and some essential flamenco guitar techniques. Over the course of ten weeks, the following topics will be covered:

  • Left-hand techniques (bars, fast changes, golpe, picado, legato, etc.)
  • Right-hand techniques (positions, bringing up voices, etc.)
  • Staying in the compas or rhythm of flamenco
  • Scales, arpeggios and slurs
  • Techniques to achieve speed and dexterity
  • Flamenco rhythms (bulerias, alegrias, fandangos, etc.)
  • Rasgeado (strumming technique) and alzapua (thumb technique)
  • Las palmas (clapping) and las contras (offbeat clapping)

Although this course is an introduction to flamenco guitar, it is not a course for guitar beginners and participants should have at least a year’s guitar playing experience. Nylon-string Spanish or classical guitars are required for use in the course. (These can be purchased from Waltons Music shops at special discounts for New School students.)
