Group Course for Beginners Aged 6-8
Guitar is an excellent starter instrument for children. Melodic, harmonic and percussive, it is satisfying to play in itself and can also serve as a ‘gateway’ musical experience for other instrumental study. It’s easy to carry, simple to store and affordable. Best of all, children want to play it! Designed for absolute beginners, Waltons New School of Music's 22-week Introducing Guitar for Children course enables young students aged 6-8 to experience early success (learning to play well-known tunes and songs in a short space of time) and have fun, while the curriculum guides them to broader musical development. The course includes melody playing, chord accompaniment, note reading skills and basic two-part solo playing.
Group learning has long been recognised as one of the most effective ways to teach children about music and instil positive lifetime attitudes towards both music and learning. A group environment provides children with the opportunity to make music together with friends and classmates, sharing common goals and skill. The interaction between students also encourages and promotes understanding, and children learn to assess their peers positively.
Children must have their own size-appropriate nylon-string (classical) guitars, to practice at home and bring to classes, for this course. Guitars are available from Waltons music shops and can also be purchased together with the course (see Course + Instrument Package below).
Introducing Guitar for Children is one of our group courses for beginners. Private (one-to-one) and partner guitar lessons are also available for students at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Go to Departments & Faculty – Guitar & Bass for more information.

'My daughter has attended Waltons for introductory guitar classes for almost two years and really enjoys it. Her teacher is great, very calm, encouraging and patient, and he doesn't talk down to them. Every week I see progress and her personal pride in playing a little more accurately and fluidly each time. The atmosphere in the building from all staff is one of professionalism, kindness and welcome.'

Fran has been involved in the music business for many years. At the age of eight he joined the Artane Boys Band, where he learned to play the clarinet, oboe and the bell lyre – before moving on to guitar (in which he earned an ABRSM diploma), banjo and mandolin. He has played professionally with a number of bands, releasing several CDs and recording various artists, including Cathy Davey. Fran has worked in several music shops and was Manager of Waltons Music for five years. In addition to teaching guitar, banjo, mandolin and music technology to students of all ages at the New School since 2003, he has also taught guitar courses at several Dublin-area primary schools and youth centres through our In-School Music Programme; taught guitar in Dublin-area businesses through our Music at Work Programme; and facilitated workshops at the Ballyfermot Community Centre aimed at helping young people understand the music business.
John has been playing and teaching music for over thirty years. His interests and skills are wide-ranging – including classical, jazz, folk and contemporary music – and he plays and teaches everything from Bach to the Beatles, and Eric Clapton to Radiohead. In addition to his guitar teaching, he has overseen and coordinated several CD album projects for which students have written, recorded and performed their own original compositions, and he has worked as artist-in-residence in several primary schools, where he taught songwriting skills. John has worked extensively as a musician both in Ireland and abroad, supporting such well-known acts as Honor Heffernan and Jimmy McCarthy, He is also a songwriter – his work has been broadcast widely on RTÉ radio and many local stations around the country – and he has written and produced two albums of music and poetry for the Dundalk poet Patrick Boyle. John has worked in education all his life and holds a BA (Hons) degree as well as a Higher Diploma in Education (PDE). In 2013, he completed a Masters in Theatre Studies at Dublin City University.
