Group Course for Intermediate Students
Next course starts 24 April 2017
'The main three components are the blues, improvisation – which is some kind of element that people are trying to make it up – and swing, which means even though they're making up music, they're trying to make it up together. It feels great, like you're having a great conversation with somebody.'
– Wynton Marsalis
This entry-level ensemble workshop is both a follow-up to Waltons New School of Music's Jazz Improvisation Basics course and an excellent stand-alone introduction to blues and jazz ensemble playing and improvisation for those new to the forms. Jazz Blues Ensemble Workshop participants will develop their practical blues and jazz ensemble and improvisation skills by exploring and playing together the following standards:
- 'All Blues'
- 'Blue Bossa'
- 'Blue Monk'
- 'Cantaloupe Island'
- 'Mercy Mercy Mercy'
- 'St. Thomas'
- 'Watermelon Man'
After the course, students who want to further explore jazz ensemble playing and develop their skills can move on to Jazz Ensemble I.
Students entering this course should be comfortable playing their instrument (after at least one year of instrumental study). Participants should have a grounding in basic music theory, including treble and bass clefs, note values, time and key signatures, scales, and frequently used terms and signs (Music Fundamentals I or equivalent). All instruments are welcome!
The Jazz Blues Ensemble Workshop is one of our group courses. Private lessons in several jazz instruments are also available. See Departments & Faculty for more information.
