Musical Theatre in the Classroom

musicaltheatre4Team-taught by two facilitators, Musical Theatre in the Classroom is an engaging, interactive workshop designed to introduce participants to the dramatic power of music through acting, movement and singing. Drama games allow participants to express their imaginations through improvised movement and song. Vocal warm-ups encourage the healthy use of young voices. Singing songs they are already familiar with, participants are asked to express different emotions and display varied character traits. And they are exposed to recordings of many different genres of music, presented with scenarios and encouraged to react ‘dramatically’ to the music. They are also invited to devise their own scenes inspired by the various genres of music played for them. Older participants are exposed to a song from the musical theatre repertoire and given an opportunity to learn the piece, exploring its dramatic content with movement and emotion.

Musical Theatre in the Classroom promotes teamwork and confidence through ensemble performance, and develops imaginations, physical alertness and musical awareness. This workshop embraces the idea of storytelling through music, utilising all the youthful expressive energy present in the classroom.

Teachers, who are asked to participate, will also be provided with suggested follow-up activities for classroom use.
