Waltons New School of Music - Pop/Rock Vocal Workshop, Dublin

Pop/Rock Vocal Workshop

Group Course for Intermediate Students

Next course starts 4 October 2017.

'Singing is like a celebration of oxygen.'

Course Description

The Pop/Rock Vocal Workshop at Waltons New School of Music is specially designed for the amateur pop, rock, blues, r’n’b, folk, soul or gospel singer and is an excellent introduction to some essential techniques specific to contemporary vocal styles:

  • Using breath support and management to achieve a more powerful, dynamic sound with less effort
  • Finding your ‘belt’ voice
  • Vocal riffing and embellishment
  • Maintaining vocal health while singing more challenging pop/rock material
  • Interpretive and storytelling techniques to heighten a song's emotional impact

Along the way, participants will get plenty of practical advice on performing, including posture, technique, stage presence and interpretation of songs. They will also learn how to choose and prepare music to perform (the workshop will include preparation with an accompanist), and they will showcase some of the material they have worked on in a final performance, open to the public. Participants are encouraged to invite friends and family along!

Although this workshop is a thorough introduction to pop/rock singing, it is not intended for absolute beginners. Participants should have some previous experience singing in choirs or musicals or have taken at least a term of private or group singing lessons.

Ríona Sally Hartman is available to speak by phone with those interested in participating in this workshop. Please let us know by email or phone if you would like her to contact you.

The Pop/Rock Vocal Workshop is one of our group courses. Private and one-off 'intensive' lessons in contemporary singing are also available. See Departments & Faculty – Voice (Singing) for more information.

 Ríona Sally Hartman, Teacher

Ríona studied architecture at University College Dublin before turning to music full-time. She studied a range of vocal genres (including classical, jazz and sean-nós) both at the New School and privately and went on to receive a BA in Jazz Performance with First Class Honours from Newpark Music Centre. Ríona has performed with a number of Irish groups and ensembles, including Monster Monster (alt-pop), Dig a Little Deeper (swing and bossa nova), the Sami Moukaddem Band (Middle Eastern jazz) and her own Ríona Sally Hartman Band, with which she released Big Starving Thing, her debut album of original material, in 2015. Reviews of the album described her as ‘a rising star’ (RTÉ lyric fm) and ‘a polished singer’ (the Independent). According to the Irish Times, ‘her finely-crafted debut album unites the musician and the songwriter, drawing water from many wells, from folk and jazz to alt pop and contemporary lieder…fresh and unclichéd.’ Ríona has taught voice for over ten years and currently performs and workshops with the National Concert Hall’s ECO (Education and Community Outreach) Band. She is on the Improvised Music Company’s board of directors.
