'[This course] makes it so easy for beginners to make music after only 5 weeks tuition.'
– T. Elton
The latest thing in music technology is the self-contained software studio. The idea is to dispense with the potentially complicated relationship between a computer sequencer, plug-ins, other programmes and external hardware. The software studios package is a self-contained programme designed to cater for all your needs – sequencing, sampling, synthesis, effects processing, mixing, etc. Best of all, the latest packages, unlike their predecessors, don’t require any special hardware to function effectively. A home computer with a basic soundcard can produce professional results. Software Studio Basics is an extensive introduction to this fascinating subject.
Working in the New School’s music technology lab with computers, MIDI controllers, sound cards and Reason software, you will explore the subject through a variety of hands-on projects. Over the course of 5 weeks and 10 hours of tuition (the course also includes 6.25 hours of lab time, supervised by the instructor), you will learn about:
- Programming. Learn to programme drum and synth phrases using a built-in drum machine and step sequencer.
- Synthesis. Learn about synthesis, sound envelopes, filters, oscillators, etc. by creating new sounds with a built-in synthesizer.
- Sampling. Learn about sampling and editing loops and creating new sounds.
- Sequencing / Editing. Learn how to sequence each of the above parts into an arrangement, effectively turning your PC into a multi-track recorder.
- Mixing / Effects. Learn how to achieve the all-important final mix, using built-in mixers, effects units and dynamic processors.
Finally, you will be introduced to the latest software studios currently available. (Participants in Software Studio Basics are entitled to substantial discounts on selected music technology products from Waltons, valid for one month after the course.)
Software Studio Basics and Home Recording Basics are two complementary courses which together provide you with an arsenal of tools and techniques for setting up and getting the most out of music technology at home. Software Studio Basics can be taken alone or together with Home Recording Basics. Although participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of the PC and Windows operating system (previous experience with any Windows-based software is enough), no previous musical training, knowledge of music technology or ability to read music is necessary.
Software Studio Basics is one of our group music technology and music production courses. Private and intensive music technology lessons are also available for students at all levels, from beginner to advanced. Go to Music Technology - Private & Intensive Lessons for more information.
