Zach Parkinson
Waltons New School of Music Faculty
Zach received his BA in Music and Economics from University College Dublin and went on to pursue a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology, also from UCD. He began learning drums at the age of fourteen and has been hooked ever since. Initially learning Jazz and Indie drumming from various teachers Zach began to move to learning heavy rock, punk and metal drumming. Zach has spent the last ten years touring around Ireland with a variety of musical outfits covering genres including metal, rock, pop, folk and indie. He currently performs in a cover band as well as an original metal project. During his time at UCD, he began performing with both the UCD Gamelan Orchestra and the National Concert Hall Gamelan Orchestra. He remains with the NCH Gamelan Orchestra and has performed extensively with them around Ireland at music festivals as well as travelling to Java, Indonesia (the home of gamelan music) to perform in a major international festival there. In addition to performing around Ireland in both bands and gamelan orchestras, Zach has also taught music theory at University College Dublin. He also works as a senior administrator with the New School and is our Child Protection Officer and Fire Safety Officer.
‘Learning an instrument is not something you can start and finish. There is always more to be learned, and professional musicians as much as music students are constantly learning. The best thing about teaching is being able to guide people on their never-ending musical journeys. I have had some great teachers in my time who helped me tremendously along the way, and I hope to do the same and make a lasting contribution to the musical development of my own students.’
