A Group Course for Intermediate Students
Next course starts 21 January 2019.
‘Give ’em the old razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle ’em
Give ’em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate….’
– from Chicago
‘Eliza, I don’t have a dollar to my name,
an acre of land, a troop to command, a dollop of fame.
All I have’s my honor, a tolerance for pain,
a couple of college credits and my top-notch brain.’
– from Hamilton
‘A fantastic course, high energy, wonderfully taught, with clear instruction and a great class atmosphere. I’d recommend it to anyone.’
– J. Ryan

Have you ever dreamed of being a Broadway or West End star? Would you just like to be able to audition with confidence for the local/community musical? Or do you just want to sing songs from musicals for fun? Waltons New School of Music’s Musical Theatre Workshop is designed for anyone interested in musical theatre singing and is an excellent opportunity to develop your vocal abilities, song/audition repertoire and dramatic skills. The workshop includes:
- Vocal techniques and warm-ups to help you produce a stronger, healthier sound
- Choosing and preparing the right song for your voice type
- Defining your character and ‘character-based’ singing
- Acting techniques and improvisation
- Solo and ensemble singing
- Dramatisation of scenes
- Managing stage fright
The workshop will also include extensive preparation with an accompanist, and (although this is not required) participants can showcase some of the material they have worked on in a final performance, open to the public. Participants are encouraged to invite family and friends along!
Although this workshop is an introduction to musical theatre, it is not intended for voice beginners. (See Introducing Singing for Adults for information on our beginners course.) Participants in the Musical Theatre Workshop should have some previous experience singing in choirs or musicals or have taken at least a term of private or group singing lessons. Please wear loose clothing and bring along a song from any musical with which you are familiar and that you would like to work on as a ‘solo’ piece.
The teacher, Sinéad Flynn, is available to speak by phone with those interested in participating in this workshop. Please let us know by email or phone if you would like her to contact you.
The Musical Theatre Workshop is one of the New School’s group courses. We also offer private singing lessons in a range of genres for students of all ages and skill levels. See Voice (Singing) Tuition for more information.
