More Information

Workshop Description

Designed for post-primary school groups, Waltons New School of Music’s one-day Leaving Cert. Music Technology workshop covers all of the requirements of the Music Technology core activity at Higher Level (25% of total marks).

Through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on activities in our Music Technology Lab, students will learn all of the requirements for this activity, including:

  • Stating the medium/system/software the student will use to input lines/parts/tracks and describing the edits he/she intends to make.
  • Inputting, saving and retrieving a two-part score. For the exam, students will be asked to input all or part of each line/part/track, at the discretion of the examiner.
  • Performing six edits. Edits should make musical sense.
  • Producing a recorded or score version of the music. While the recording or score may be produced in advance on the day of the examination, the candidate will be required to demonstrate the procedure involved to the examiner.
  • Playing two pieces from the standard electronic repertoire or compiling and playing to own backing track (at least 32 bars long).

Leaving Cert. Music Technology can take place either in the New School’s Music Technology Lab or in the students’ school. For workshops taking place in our Music Technology Lab, there is a maximum of sixteen students per workshop (two per workstation). The workshop is available by group enrolment only.

In addition to his teaching with the New School, he has taught guitar, ukulele and music technology to a wide range of students privately, in different music schools and for Music Generation.

‘My approach to teaching is based around the philosophy of making music as relatable as possible to students of all ages and backgrounds. I prefer to demonstrate to students how music plays an integral part of their everyday lives and to let their own experiences and interests dictate each individual’s learning process. I also try to integrate technology with instrumental lessons, as I believe that acquiring technological skills as a musician is extremely valuable in the current musical landscape.’
