Summer Programme

at Waltons New School of Music

We offer a range of music tuition at the New School during our two-part Summer Term (July and/or August). In addition to private (one-to-one), partner and small group instruction in a number of instruments (including voice/singing), we offer summer versions of some of our most popular group courses for beginners, an acclaimed songwriting workshop, an introduction to music technology, Intensive Lessons and Irish Music Tasters.

Many of our courses fill in advance, and early enrolment is advisable.

Private • Partner • Small Group Lessons

Our 2019 Summer Term is divided into two parts. Students enrolling for private (one-to-one), partner or small group lessons can choose one or both parts:

Part One (5 weeks): 2 July – 1 August
Part Two (4 weeks): 6 – 29 August

30-, 45- and 60-minute private, partner and small group lessons are offered during our Summer Term for a wide range of instruments (including voice/singing):

July Courses for Beginners

We offer five-week summer versions of some of our most popular ‘Introducing’ instrumental and vocal courses for beginners in July. Summer 2019 course schedules will be available in May 2019.

July Music Technology Course

Summer Music Technology Essentials, a five-week summer version of our Introducing Music Technology course, is also available in July. The summer 2019 course schedule will be available in May 2019.


August Courses for Beginners

We offer four-week summer versions of some of our most popular ‘Introducing’ instrumental and vocal courses for beginners in August. Summer 2019 course schedules will be available in May 2019.

August Songwriting Workshop

How is a song written? What is a hook? What makes rhyme? Which comes first, melody or lyrics? In The Art & Craft of Songwriting – a five-evening, fifteen-hour workshop, now in its ninth year – acclaimed singer-songwriter Melanie O’Reilly will answer these frequently asked questions and many more. The summer 2019 workshop schedule will be available in May 2019.


Intensive Lessons

Single one- or two-hour Intensive Lessons – for all skill levels – can be arranged for almost any instrument (including voice/singing) and subject taught at the New School.

Intensive lessons are ideal for:

  • Students who would like to schedule their lessons flexibly or who cannot be accommodated on our regular timetable
  • Students preparing for performances, auditions, entrance examinations, competitions or practicals
  • Prospective students wishing to ‘try out’ lessons or instruments

Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Except for wind instruments and uilleann pipes intensive lessons, instruments may be borrowed for use in the lesson – subject to availability – if required.


Irish Music Tasters

Designed for absolute beginners of all ages and running since 1999, the New School’s Irish Music Tasters for individuals and groups are brief immersions in the world of Irish traditional music and have introduced hundreds of people from all over the world to its beautiful melodies and infectious rhythms . We offer:

An Introduction to Irish Music

Tasters are scheduled based on both participant and teacher availability. (We ask for your availability on our Booking Form.)
