Gwen Dukes
Waltons New School of Music Faculty
Piano • Theory & Musicianship • Introducing Piano/Keyboard for Children
Gwen started playing piano at the age of five and fell in love with the instrument from the start. In secondary school, she played in the orchestra for school musicals, as well as playing piano with the school’s choirs and folk group. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BMusEd and went to do an MPhil in Music at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama (now the TU Dublin Conservatoire), where she studied with the renowned pianist and educator Pádhraic Ó Cuinneagáin. She was also awarded an ATCL diploma in piano from Trinity College London. In addition to teaching piano and theory/musicianship with the New School, Gwen has taught at several music schools in Dublin, including piano and diploma written papers at Kylemore College and music and movement at DIT / TU Dublin. She also started playing cello as an adult beginner, and this has given her valuable insights into some of the challenges faced by her adult students. As a performer, Gwen has played with a soul band; worked with solo singers in a range of genres, including classical, popular, soul and blues; and performed with a gospel choir.
‘All of us have music within. The privilege of being a teacher is in helping the student to unlock that music, express it and share it with others.’
