About Online Tuition

Online Violin LessonOnline tuition works just like ordinary music tuition taking place in the New School itself. You will have the personal attention of a real teacher, an expert in his/her field, providing you with immediate feedback and helping you to improve. The only difference between online and ‘in-school’ tuition is that students take their lessons, courses or workshops in their own homes.

To access online tuition, you will need:

  • An instrument for tuition and practice (except for voice, theory, songwriting and music technology tuition).
  • An internet-connected laptop, computer, tablet or smartphone.
  • Ideally, internet speed at least 1.5Mb per second. (You can test your speed using Measurement Lab’s Speed Test.)
  • Headphones or earbuds, if possible.
  • Free Zoom software or app.*

*   If you haven’t learned music with Zoom before, please see our printable Zoom for Students information sheet for information on how to download and set up Zoom for music tuition.

Online Intensive Lessons

Online Intensive LessonsAvailable for most of the the instruments (including voice) and subjects taught in the New School, Online Intensive Lessons are a flexible approach to music tuition and are ideal for:

  • Students who would like to schedule their lessons on different days/times or at different frequencies (i.e. every two or three weeks) or who cannot be accommodated on our regular timetables.
  • Students preparing for performances, auditions, entrance examinations, competitions or practicals.
  • Prospective students who would like to ‘try out’ lessons before committing to longer-term enrolment.

Participants in Online Intensive Lessons for more than one person don’t have to be in the same location.

‘I’ve been taking Intensive Lessons in blues guitar on and off for the past couple of years. They’re a great solution for someone who can’t commit to weekly lessons. Also, I have a fantastic teacher who gives me plenty of material to work on between my lessons.’
– K. Anderson

‘I’ve always wanted to play drums, but I didn’t know where to begin. I saw that Waltons offers one-off Intensive Lessons, took the plunge and haven’t looked back! The teacher was so helpful and encouraging that I decided to enrol for regular drum kit lessons and buy an electronic kit. I’m hugely enjoying the experience.’
– M. Butler

‘I wish I had discovered the New School’s Intensive Lessons sooner! I have a great singing teacher, and I have a lesson with her whenever I can, but I was out of the country far too much to have regular weekly lessons. When the first lockdown happened, I started taking online intensives, which worked very well. So when I do start travelling again I plan to take online intensives when I’m away.’
– S. Canavan

‘I have been taken singing intensives for the past three years. Early on, I decided not to stick to one teacher so I could benefit from different approaches, and the standard of teaching from all the teachers I’ve had has been uniformly excellent.’
– C. Doyle

‘I took an online singing Intensive Lesson with my sister, and not only was it very enjoyable but we learned so much about how singing ‘works’. Thanks for a great experience!’
– P. Grady

‘Much as I’d like to take lessons every week, my work schedule doesn’t allow it, and I have found Intensive Lessons to be an ideal solution to this problem. I take an Intensive Lesson whenever I can, and my teacher gives me plenty of material to work on between lessons.’
– E. Sanders

Sight Singing Made EasyOur Sight Singing Made Easy course combines essential music theory (treble and bass clefs, notes and note values, time signatures, frequently used terms and signs) with a practical approach to sight singing informed by the music education philosophies of Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967). The course will simultaneously develop your music reading skills and practical sight singing – incorporating such elements as pitch, tuning, rhythm and solfège (do-re-mi, etc.). And you will learn to use ‘inner hearing’ to picture how notes sound without actually hearing them. Once your aural skills are developed, sight singing at the correct pitch becomes simple. This course has taught hundreds of students the fundamentals of sight singing. No previous musical experience or ability to read music is required.

‘The teacher’s easy manner gave me the courage to have a go even if I wasn’t getting things right. By my own reckoning I have made huge progress since I began the course.’
– M. Byrne

‘Sight singing is a skill that I thought was beyond me, but when it was broken down and explained well by an excellent teacher, and then practised of course, it’s amazing how quickly it became second nature!’

Songwriting Workshop

6 weeks, 31 January – 13 March 2024
(No class on 14 February – Valentine’s Day)
Wednesdays 6.30 – 8 pm
Teacher: Luan Parle
Tuition Fee: €200

Songwriting WorkshopWhether you are new to songwriting and would like to take your music beyond the shower, or you have already written songs but would like to have a better grounding in the basics, our six-week Songwriting Workshop, taught by one of our acclaimed songwriter/teachers, will help you to develop your creative ideas – in any musical style – and turn them into finished songs.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the craft of songwriting, including standard song ‘elements’ (verse, chorus, bridge, rhyme, meter, etc.) and their various permutations. Participants will then start working on material both individually and collaboratively, with constructive feedback and encouragement from the workshop teacher and other participants.

Songwriting Workshop classes are intended to be instructive, encouraging and collaborative. Here is some of what’s covered:

  • Exercises to break ‘writer’s block’ and get the songwriting juices flowing.
  • Examining Great Songs, new and old, and what makes them work so well.
  • Collaborating and providing useful and supportive feedback for peers.
  • Lyric Writing. What makes a great first line? What makes a great chorus? (The verses of the song are like climbing up a mountain. The chorus is the view from the top. When you get to the top, the view better be worth the climb!)
  • Melody Writing. More than any other element, a great melody that can be sung alone without accompaniment is what makes a truly great song. And a ‘singable’ melody (that is, a melody that others can sing, not just the performer) is much more memorable.
  • Hooks. A great ‘hook’ is that brief, irresistible bit of music that the listener will remember even after hearing your song only once.
  • Finding a Groove. How to create a rhythmic sound that will make your music stand out.
  • The Business of Songwriting, including publishing, royalties, song placement, etc.

Participants whose primary interest is lyric writing, music writing – or both – are welcome. Those who play an instrument or sing can incorporate it into their work. Music reading is not necessary to participate, and knowledge of a chordal instrument (guitar, piano, etc.) is helpful but not required.

Online Irish Music Tasters

Irish Music TastersDesigned for absolute beginners of all ages (although our expert teachers can take intermediate and advanced players as well) and running since 1999, the New School’s famous Irish Music Tasters are brief immersions in the world of Irish traditional music and have introduced hundreds of people from all over the world to its beautiful melodies and infectious rhythms.

Our Irish Music Tasters include:

  • Bodhrán Taster – introducing some essential playing techniques as well as the two most important rhythms of Irish music, reels an jigs.
  • Tin Whistle Taster – introducing the essentials of playing this beautiful and expressive Irish instrument, as well as a selection of great Irish tunes.
  • An Introduction to Irish Music – including a fascinating historical survey of Irish traditional music, demonstrations of different Irish instruments and recordings of great traditional musicians.

We also offer Combined Tasters that can include two or all three of these.

While our in-school Irish Music Tasters take place at the New School, online Irish Music Tasters take place where you are, which can be anywhere in the world. If there are two or more participants in our online Tasters, they don’t have to be in the same location – or even in the same country.

All participants in online instrumental Tasters will need to have either ‘D’ tin whistles or bodhráns (ideally at least 15-inch) and beaters. Because of the New School’s affiliation with Waltons Music Ireland, whistles and bodhráns can be purchased from Waltons at discounted prices and shipped to participants.

‘A fabulous instructor! So knowledgeable about the tin whistle as well as the history of Ireland and its music and instruments.’
– K. Davi

‘My violin teacher is both inspiring and down-to-earth, and I feel motivated to improve with every lesson. I started with lessons in the school and am now taking them online and really enjoying the experience. With no commute, I have more time to practice!’
– S. Barry

‘The online piano lessons [my son] has been taking with Waltons have been just fantastic. Having grown up with more traditional piano lessons myself, I was amazed at how well his teacher was able to observe and respond to his playing. Zoom is so easy to use, and [my son] not only looks forward to the lessons but actually wants to practice between them! Highly recommended.’
– S. Behan

‘Nice small group, excellent interaction in the Zoom classes. I’ve learned a lot over the 5 weeks.’ [Summer Guitar for Adults]
– O. Boland

‘I honestly didn’t think I would get so much out of online singing lessons, but my teacher’s just brilliant and I have learned loads. I live much too far from Dublin to come to the school on a regular basis, so online tuition has been a great experience for me.’
– S. Boyle

‘Really enjoyed this online course [Introducing Guitar for Adults]. It was an hour escape every week, and I loved the group dynamic!’
– S. Brien

‘My online singing lessons with the New School over the past few months have been a revelation! I know it can take people a bit of time to get used to online learning, but I have an excellent teacher who explained everything so clearly and listened to my singing so intently that I honestly prefer online lessons to in-person now. And the best part of it is that I have no commute!’
– P. Browne

‘Really super lessons, both in person and online. Studying voice for musical theatre with Sinéad Flynn has been such an enriching experience. I have learnt so much in the past 18 months, and the lessons have done wonders for my confidence. I’m even taking exams in my forties!’
– L. Buckley

‘My banjo teacher is both patient and encouraging, and the lessons are very informative. I’m very happy with my online lessons and plan to continue.’
– J. Cahill

– S. Canavan

‘My son is really enjoying his piano lessons with the New School and is progressing by leaps and bounds. When I first signed him up for lessons, none of the in-school time school time slots was available, so I started him with online lessons, thinking of it as stop-gap until in-school times became available. But the online lessons are going so well that I’ll definitely stick with these. The added advantage is that there’s no need to ferry him to the school and back!’
– P. Cassidy

‘I felt my basic guitar skills improved considerably over the online improvers Guitar for Adults course. Plenty of challenging and interesting songs to work on to continue to improve. Colin was great. He clearly knows his stuff and is very easy going, approachable, encouraging and genuinely interested in making sure everyone was getting something from the classes.’
– S. Clare

‘A truly excellent online course. [Music Fundamentals] Eoin really engages his students and not only makes the essentials of music reading (and writing) easy to understand but makes the whole learning process fun as well. I would highly recommend this course for anyone interested in learning to read music who doesn’t know where to start. You won’t regret it!’
– S. Clarke

‘Really enjoyable course and fantastic teacher. I was delighted that it was available online, as I live in Kerry – a bit too far to commute!’ [Introducing Ukulele for Adults]
– B. Clerkin

‘I’ve really enjoyed my online lessons in concert flute. I live in the west, and it’s great to be able to access music tuition with such an excellent teacher.’
– A. Conway

‘I started taking online guitar lessons with Waltons during the lockdown in May, and I have to say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In fact, I found online lessons so effective and convenient that I’m continuing with them this year as well. I have an excellent teacher who really cares about his students’ progress, and I’m hugely enjoying the experience of learning guitar.’
– F. Cooney

‘I was delighted to hear that such a renowned music school was now offering online music tuition. I live in the west and had great difficulty finding a piano teacher near me who could teach my skill level. (I wanted to work on a performing diploma.) My piano lessons with Waltons so far have been great – everything I could have hoped for. I have a superb teacher who is both encouraging and very clear in her advice and instructions, and I’m confident that she’ll prepare me well for my diploma.’
– S. Deasy

‘Peter Dobai, my saxophone teacher, tailors my online lessons perfectly to match my needs. I am 66 and already play jazz guitar, so I have a little knowledge but need a lot of input on theory, etc. I’ve already recommended Peter as a very versatile teacher who moulds his instruction to the needs of his students.’
– N. Dempsey

‘An excellent online course [Introducing Guitar for Adults]. I can finally feel confident in the basics and had great fun along the way!’
– L. Dennis

‘Marieclaire is a great [violin] teacher. I was hesitant at first to sign my daughter up for online lessons, as I could not picture how music lessons might be held online. However, the lessons are fantastic! The teacher notices even small things and has done an excellent job in teaching and motivating to improve.’
– S. Domarkas

‘I’ve been taking online lessons, and Andrew, my guitar teacher, inspired to start playing again after 30 years. He’s a super teacher and sends me helpful notes straight after each lesson. I’ve been learning more and more difficult guitar pieces after my initial tentative lockdown attempt to restart lessons.’
– S. Doyle

‘This beginners online course [Introducing Piano/Keyboard for Adults] was brilliant. It explained the basics in reading music and playing the piano in a simple and understandable way. I believe I have a new life skill that I really enjoy.’
– B. Duffy

‘Really enjoyed the [Introducing Guitar for Adults] course, delivered online. Colin is a very good teacher, calm and relaxed but pushes us at the right times too. He engages very well with us as students and is very encouraging. I was starting from scratch, and by the end of the course I was able to play through several songs from start to finish – albeit not expertly – and that, for me, was a great result. Would highly recommend this to any adult learners looking to start playing the guitar
– F. Dunne

‘My only knowledge of music was as a subject I had taken for my Junior Cert. 50 years ago! The adult piano online beginners’ classes [Introducing Piano/Keyboard for Adults] with Aoife were great. She is a lovely person and is very good at explaining and encouraging. This is a new hobby for me, and although I am slow to learn I really enjoy the lessons and the practice.’
– S. Flynn

‘A silver lining of this pandemic was that lessons moved online, and even though I had moved to Kerry I could continue learning to sing with Sinéad Flynn. She is a fabulous teacher and a huge asset to the New School. I would highly recommend to any aspiring singers or performers to sign up for lessons with Sinéad and the New School.’
– L. Foxe

‘Barbara Dagg is a brilliant piano teacher – patient, adaptive to the different needs of my three children and helping them to progress at their own pace. I also really appreciate that it has been possible to continue the lessons online, as we would be unable to travel to the school in person regularly. Online tuition is fantastic!’
– N. Garvey

‘Given the restrictions in place due to COVID-19, online teaching has provided me with a great opportunity to continue my guitar lessons, with my teacher’s guidance and patience, building on what I have learned.’
– R. Gibney

‘I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the singing/voice classes [Summer Singing for Adults] I have taken with Fiadh Rua Gregg: the mix of exercises, technical knowledge and skills, learning new songs, and the experience of singing with other people. I also enjoyed listening to and learning from other people in the group. I have learned so much about my voice, and I really value this learning – considering how much I use my voice in my work. The whole experience has been deeply enriching. I appreciated how Fiadh pitched and paced each class with a blend of tasks that provided a challenge while also offering a sense of achievement. While I attended all classes online, I felt very much part of a group, and this was due to Fiadh’s skill as a teacher, as she created such an encouraging, facilitative and supportive atmosphere. I had wanted to take singing/voice classes for years, and I’m so glad I did!’
– N. Giffney

‘Niamh is a very understanding and helpful voice teacher and great at getting me to pronounce some tricky Italian words! I also really like the convenience of online lessons with no need to travel.’

– B. Gormley

‘I took an online singing Intensive Lesson with my sister, and not only was it very enjoyable but we learned so much about how singing ‘works’. Thanks for a great experience!’
– P. Grady

‘It doesn’t make sense that Waltons can teach a woman in her fifties how to play the violin in her North Leitrim kitchen, but my teacher David Burns is doing just that – and exceedingly well.’
– A. Hayes

‘Thank you for offering your wonderful tuition online, thus opening up the opportunity of learning with a top class voice tutor at a distance from Dublin.’
– L. Hennessy

‘I have wanted to do a music technology course for years but the opportunity didn’t come up until I saw that Waltons were offering an online version of their Introducing Music Technology course. Signing up was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. My zero experience in recording music was no problem because it is tailored for beginners, and looking back on how much I learned in such a short space of time is incredible! The teacher is very friendly, helpful, and explains things in a clear and concise way. I would highly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in the subject!’
– A. Hickey

‘I’ve really enjoyed my online lessons. I had tried learning banjo with YouTube videos but found the whole experience frustrating and difficult. Now I have progressed faster with just a few lessons (so far) with a great teacher than I had when trying to learn myself for over a year!’
– S. James

‘Daniel is a great piano teacher. He is dedicated and very patient, particularly with younger students like my 6-year-old daughter. We’re thrilled with her progress, and she loves the piano lessons. ‘I had always been fond of the piano but had no training, theoretical or practical. The [Introducing Piano/Keyboard for Adults] course I took introduced me to both, and with what I learned I’ve have been able to continue my tuition independently. Aoife was a lovely teacher, patient and thorough, and she made the course very enjoyable, user friendly and easy to understand. – E. Kelly

‘I’m taking singing lessons with Niamh McCormack, and I really like her approach of going with the ‘natural’ voice. I also like that the school is inclusive of ‘mature’ students. And finally, as I’m not able to travel into town for lessons, online lessons give me the opportunity to continue.’
– M. Kelly

‘I took part in the online Ukulele for Adults course, followed by partner lessons, during the summer. The classes were excellent, and I learned much more than I could have hoped for in such a short space of time. I thoroughly enjoyed the classes and would have no hesitation in recommending the course.’
– E. Kennedy

‘My children have been taking online lessons with Barbara Dagg, who is an outstanding piano teacher with the experience and patience to inspire even the most challenging of children. She tried different techniques and ways of teaching to find something that worked well for both of my children. For my oldest, she was supportive and understanding as she went into her first pre-exam and gave her confidence. For my youngest, she tried different ways of working with her to find something that stuck. They have both progressed tremendously in the last year and enjoy playing. We have had a great experience with the school, and I have already recommended it to other families.’
– B. Kocher Gormley

‘Our online Tin Whistle Taster was super fun and engaging, and a great way to engage with the team. A really unique experience and such an interactive way to learn more about Ireland and traditional Irish music. Harry and Éamonn were really great teachers – patient, passionate and masters of their music!’
– A. Lavelle, Asana Software

‘I would recommend the [Introducing Music Technology] course to anyone who thinks learning how to use DAW software is beyond their reach. I can’t think of a better place to start. The course made it easy to understand a lot of technical terms and information with ample time to ask questions and get clarification, which is quite an achievement for an online course. Colin is an excellent, patient and hands-on teacher.’
– S. Lynch

‘David is calm and understanding teacher who is very good at explaining and imparting his knowledge of the violin. Would definitely recommend. And it’s convenient and easy to take online lessons on my laptop from home. I have had a very good experience with the school overall – great teachers and helpful staff in the school office.’
– C. Mansfield

‘Excellent online course, great teacher, highly recommended.’ [Summer Music Technology Essentials]
– G. McCaffrey

‘I was 60 years old this May, and I achieved a merit in Grade on 1 June 2021. Every day I look forward to improving, and I hope to achieve Grade 2 this year. My online lessons on Saturday morning are a lovely start to the weekend. I have had two piano teachers here – Luke Howard and Andriy Blyznyuk – and have learned that you can progress learning from different styles of teaching. If you have a busy working life, I recommend learning a musical instrument from the comfort of your home with Waltons New School of Music.’
– R. McCaul

‘I have a very friendly and understanding voice teacher. I learned a lot from the lessons, and she has a wealth of knowledge. She approached the lessons with ease, and I felt comfortable singing with her. I looked forward to my lessons every week and I would highly recommend her to other students who wish to pursue voice/singing lessons. I also like that there are both online and in-person tuition options. I found it difficult to find online singing lessons, and it was very beneficial for me as I do not live in the greater Dublin area and I am on the move a lot. Waltons New School of Music offers a great range of subjects and a large variety of instruments to learn. The enrolment process was straightforward, and their communication regarding enrolment and finalising lessons was very quick and efficient.’
– H. McDermott

‘I like the flexibility of [my daughter] doing her guitar lessons online. Also, Colin is great in that he is guided by what she wants to do rather than being prescriptive. He is very good with her and knows his instrument very well.’

‘I recently completed the 6-week online Songwriting Workshop. I was already writing lyrics and music before joining the course, but I required some better structuring techniques and to develop the general skill further. The course has given me the confidence to write better tracks and expand my style of writing. Thanks!!!’
– J. Mulcahy

‘Peter is a great clarinet teacher, who is always trying to make you think about what you are studying in new ways. As a result, my online lessons are very engaging. He has an amazing knowledge of both the history and theory of music and combines these eloquently to help you think through what you are studying. The result is that you discover new music which encourages you to practice, and you never know – maybe someday you could play this? You guys are lucky to have such a great teacher. I look forward to my lesson every week!’
– J. Mulvey

‘With online tuition, place becomes irrelevant. As someone who lives away from Dublin, I was delighted that I could participate in singing lessons, which would normally be inaccessible to me, and the experience was wonderful. I like the style adopted by my teacher, Melanie O’Reilly, and felt it perfectly suited me.’
– M. Murphy

– S. Novais

‘Attending the summer online guitar class for adults [Summer Guitar for Adults] was one of the best and most rewarding learning experiences of my life. I would never have expected that at my age (48) I could still learn the first steps in guitar playing in such a short time. A journey to explore a side of myself that was hidden for a long time has just started, and I am delighted. A lot of hard work is in front of me, but I will definitely continue. Highly recommended for adults with a flare for music, better late than never….’
– C. Papadeli

Very happy to recommend Waltons to anyone looking for music lessons.’

– L. Ryan

‘Harry is just great. In a few tin whistle lessons (all online and taken from Dublin, Amsterdam, Rome and Poland!), he taught me the basics of the Irish tin whistle, with a little effort from my side. His key capability is being able to transfer knowledge in an enjoyable manner.’
– I. Savi

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my two terms of the Sing & Swing Jazz Vocal Ensemble. I feel not only that I’m part of a group of kindred spirits but also that I’m individually encouraged and supported. Additionally, a wide repertoire of songs is covered, with both personal and group favourites considered.
